Cops called to funeral for custody dispute over child
May 05, 2010 4:19 PM
PORTSMOUTH — Police were called to a city cemetery Wednesday for an unruly custody dispute that occurred during a funeral.
Capt. Corey MacDonald said a person attending a funeral at the Temple Israel Cemetery on Banfield Road called 911 and said a biological mother and a stepmother began pulling a child back and forth during a funeral for the child's father.
No one was arrested, and police intend to investigate the allegations that the child was pulled, he said.
“It was one of the most unpleasant calls I've been on in 13 years,” he said.
MacDonald said detectives were dispatched because of the unusual nature of the call and that it took almost two hours to determine who has lawful custody of the child.
“At the end of the day, we had to enforce a court order by making the child leave with his biological mother from another state,” said MacDonald.
The dispute will likely continue through the family court, according to the police captain.
