Cason

Derek Ret Cason, 23, of 7301 W. University Ave., was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and depriving a parent or guardian of custody of a minor.

No injuries were reported, according to an arrest report written by Alachua County Sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Schabruch.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Thursday when the child's mother, Tanise McBride, went to pick up the child from Cason's apartment, where the child had been staying while McBride was at work, Schabruch said.

McBride told deputies that after Cason handed her the baby, he apparently changed his mind and forcibly took the baby back. McBride relinquished control but tried to regain custody while Cason was putting the child into a car seat, the Sheriff's Office reported.

McBride told deputies that Cason took a fighting stance, so she backed off, but when he walked around to the driver's door, she tried again to get to the baby.

While McBride was standing in the open doorway of the car, Cason allegedly began backing up, and she said she yelled at him to stop, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Cason stopped the car after backing out of the parking space, argued some more with McBride, then turned over the baby to her, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Cason was booked into the Alachua County jail.
